A HOUSE WITH HISTORY

The hotel building was constructed in 1904 and still bears the charm of Vienna’s Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) architecture. Originally used as a residence for young women, it was soon converted by Karoline Zipser into the “Pension Zipser” with 11 single and 2 double rooms.Between 1920 and 1931, writer Ödön von Horváth stayed here several times and even mentioned the pension favorably in his book Tales from the Vienna Woods.

In 1967, the Austerer family took over. Hedwig Austerer expanded the hotel to 53 fully equipped rooms. Her son Manfred continued to modernize the business and, from 1972 onward, ran the hotel with his wife Elisabeth—carrying out regular renovations to offer guests maximum comfort.

YOUr HOST BERNHARD AuSTERER

The family business was taken over by Bernhard Austerer, son of Manfred and Elisabeth, in 1999. By 2002, the former guesthouse had evolved into the 3-star Hotel Zipser. Now in its third generation of family ownership, the hotel embodies a harmonious blend of tradition, Viennese hospitality and thoughtful modernisation.

Bernhard’s new role as manager allowed Manfred Austerer to devote more time to tourism advocacy in the Vienna Chamber of Commerce. His efforts earned him the honorary title of ‘Kommerzialrat’ and the Golden Medal of Honor of the City of Vienna.

The fourth generation is already waiting in the wings and has even inspired the names of our two private apartments—ensuring that the legacy of this beautiful Art Nouveau hotel continues.
