In autumn 2011 the Bank Austria Kunstforum will be showing the first comprehensive retrospective in Austria devoted to the Columbian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero. The exhibition will include around 70 paintings and encompass the entire universe of the South American artist, from his first works in the late 1950s until the present day: genre scenes, portraits, nudes, still life -all themes that he interprets with allusions to his South American homeland. They are scenes of seeming cheer and innocuousness, which do not lack a certain ambiguity. Botero has been astonishing the world for more than 50 years with his opulent figures; they never cease to surprise and their aesthetics quasi contradict his precise handling of form and subtle colouration, repeatedly challenging modern art history to question its values. This phenomenon of Botero – and it is more topical than ever – will be the subject of the Kunstforum exhibition and catalogue.
