Frida Kahlo Retrospective

The exhibit is unique: never have so many of Frida Kahlo’s works been on display in Vienna. The Bank Austria Kunstforum is showing 60 paintings and 90 works on paper, tracing the career of this exceptional artist, who died in 1954. – From the first self-portraits, which recall the figurative ideals of Renaissance painting, to the images tending toward surrealism, to her expressionistic self-portraits. The exhibit will be complemented by documentary photographic material from Frida Kahlo’s grandniece.

Frida Kahlo’s works were officially recognized in Mexico as a “national cultural treasure.” In 2002, Hollywood depicted her life in a film starring Salma Hayek in the lead role, who received an Oscar nomination. The painter’s fate has always been touching and fascinating; throughout her entire life, she suffered from the aftermath of a terrible bus accident. Frida Kahlo’s works, which only consist of 143 images (of which 55 are self-portraits), remain impressive to this day.
